Interventions to Utilize with Your Loved One with Aggressive Behaviors

Communicate for success.

Reminisce with your loved one about specific details of their past.

Validate and support their feelings.

Find items that they find comfort in, e.g., a photograph of the family.

Provide consistent caregivers and a consistent schedule. Stick to your loved one’s routine.

Provide recreational activities that match their abilities and interests, as tolerated.

Break down instructions into one-step increments.

Identify the triggers of the aggression. Be a detective. There is never a behavior that just occurs.

Keep ongoing communication between family members and caregivers over any noted changes in patterns or behaviors.

Help your loved one to slow down and relax.

Use music to calm your loved one (providing they like music and ensure it matches their interest).

Use spiritual support if this is important to your loved one.

Remain calm and speak in a soft tone.
